Modernizing a €300M+ e-commerce platform without stopping it

We turned a tangled legacy WordPress codebase into a modern, fast-moving platform with zero disruption to the client's €300M+ annual revenue.

// the challenge

A German software provider sold its products and licenses through a platform built over years without a clear structure. It could not go down, and deployments were manual and error-prone.

// what we did

As their long-term platform partner, we set up automated testing and deployment, cleaned up the code step by step alongside new features, and rebuilt their custom page builder into independent modules, so changing one part no longer breaks another.

// challenges
  • monolithic, tightly coupled legacy code
  • strict zero-downtime requirement
  • no CI/CD
  • a proprietary page builder the client team was used to
  • layout changes that risked breaking the site
// approach
  • CI/CD pipelines, version control rules and Agile sprints
  • refactoring to modern WordPress standards
  • the page builder split into isolated modules
  • a component library whose parts work independently
  • tech-debt tasks scheduled inside regular sprints
// stack
  • WordPress
  • PHP
  • GitHub Actions
  • CI/CD
  • JavaScript
// the result
€300M+annual revenue kept running
100%automated deployments
2xfeature delivery speed

“Taking over a legacy enterprise codebase generating hundreds of millions in revenue is no easy feat. They successfully modernised our deployment pipelines and completely overhauled our page builder architecture without disrupting our day-to-day operations. Our feature delivery speed has never been higher.”
